New Catholic Bishop ordained for Wewak
The new Bishop for Wewak Bishop Jozef Roszynski,SVD, was consecrated yesterday in Wewak at Wirui, Saunsel, an open-air amphitheatre near the Cathedral in Wewak.
Catholic Bishops of PNG and Solomon Islands General Secretary Father Victor Roche,SVD said more than 7,000 people witnessed the ceremony in the presence of 120 priests and 19 bishops of PNG and Solomon Islands.
Archbishop Michael Banach, the Apostolic Nuncio to PNG and Solomon Islands was the consecrating bishop while Archbishop Steve Reichert of Madang and Archbishop John Ribat of Port Moresby were the co-consecrators.
Bishop Jozef Roszynski, SVD is 53 years old and was born in Poland on 18th August 1962.
He became a priest of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) on 30th April 1989 before his arrival into PNG on 13th October 1992.
He mainly worked in the Wewak Diocese and for the SVDs in Madang before he became bishop-elect for Wewak.
His ordination yesterday saw senior PNG clergy of Wewak Diocese and the Provincial Superior of SVDs, Fr.Jozef Maciolek presenting Bishop-elect Roszynski to be consecrated as the new bishop of Wewak.
During the ceremony that followed he was given the Gospel, Ring, Mitre (Bishop’s hat), Crozier (wooden or metal staff, to show that he is the shepherd of the people).
