Peter ToRot day in Sydney
By Fr Tomas McDonough
The Feast Day of Blessed peter ToRot ToRot was celebrated in great style on Sunday July 6th at St Brigid’s Parish in Marrickville, Sydney.
The parish is under the care of the Passionist Community as is the parish of St Joseph in Boroko, Port Moresby.
At the invitation of Fr Jacob Kuman appointed to St Brigid’s, fifty-three Papua New Guineans from Boroko parish came to Australia to join Australian based Papua New Guineans in celebrating the feast.
The PNG visitors were from East New Britain, New Ireland and elsewhere, along with a number of PNG Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. They were joined by the PNG Sydney Consul Mr Stephen Singin and the President of the PNG Wantok association.
Australian based Fr Peter from Chimbu and Fr Paul from Mt Hagen concelebrated with Fr Jacob, along with Fr Tomas McDonough, Provincial of the Passionist Congregation and Fr John Pearce parish priest of St Brigid’s.
In a packed church, the PNG choir lifted the roof with joyous song and traditional processions. The local parishioners were thrilled at the vitality and energy of the celebration and deeply touched by the enormous faith of the Papua New Guinea church, represented by these visitors.
After the celebration the PNG provided ‘bung kaikai’ and a ‘singsing’ for everyone gathered.
It was a great celebration in honour of a great PNG Saint.
